How to Choose Professional Barber Clippers
You do not need the most costly clipper. You need one that fits the cuts you do. Start with the blade, the grip, and how you work.
What will you use it for?
Do you cut thick hair, make fades, or trim at home? A fade is a cut that goes from short to long with no hard line. Each job may call for a different tool.
For full haircuts, a clipper is a good place to start. For beard lines and small edges, a trimmer may be enough. Our clipper and trimmer guide shows how they differ.
Learn what the guards do
A guard is a comb that clips onto the blade. It helps leave hair at a set length. A longer guard leaves more hair.
Check which guards come in the box. Make sure they fit that clipper. If you are new to cutting hair, start long. You can cut more off, but you cannot put it back.
Check the side lever
On many clippers, the side lever shifts the blade. It gives you small changes in cut length. This can help blend a fade.
Some levers move freely. Others click into set spots. Neither style is best for everyone. The Wahl Vapor Switch lets you use either style. That is one feature to compare, not a reason to spend more than you need.
Cord or no cord?
A corded clipper does not need a charge. A cordless clipper gives you more room to move. Check how long a charge lasts and how long it takes to fill back up.
Not all cordless tools work while plugged in. Check the guide for that model.
Think about your hand, too
A tool should feel easy to hold. Check its weight, grip, and where the switch sits. Motor names alone will not tell you how it feels to use.
If your clipper cuts well and feels right, you may not need a new one. Clean it, oil it, and check the blade first. Our blade-care guide can help.
